In the field of civil engineering, the material is called track ballast and consists of specially shaped stones which form the basic foundation for modern rail transport. Even though the stones seem to have been casually dumped, the track ballast is in fact a deliberately engineered layer which is essential for safety, for the long-term running of the railways and for structural stability.
