The creosote bush is a typical plant of the Mojave Desert and is especially well adapted to desert conditions because of its capacity to withstand intense heat, receive only limited rainfall, and grow in soils that are poor in nutrients. Over many generations of stem growth, a distinct circular pattern is formed. The central part originally present slowly vanishes, so that only the more recent stems remain around the edge. What is the age of King Clone?
The botanist Frank C. Vasek looked into the extraordinary growth patterns of creosote clones in the Mojave Desert. In his 1980 article in the American Journal of Botany, he studied the rates of stem growth and also used radiocarbon dating on the wood. From these measurements, Vasek calculated that the largest known clone might be as old as 11,700 years. At the same time, he warned that changes in the growth rate over many thousands of years could cause the true age to be somewhat different.
King Clone extends to about 45 feet (14 metres) in width, creating a stunning living ring in the desert terrain.

Protected for Future Generations
Scientific and ecological importance is attached to these ancient creosote formations, which is why California has set up the King Clone Ecological Reserve in San Bernardino County. The reserve includes approximately 488 acres and was established specifically to protect the ancient creosote rings and the desert habitat surrounding them.
