In the far northwest Indian Ocean, near the Gulf of Aden, there is an island that looks like no other place on Earth. Socotra Island, a part of the Socotra Archipelago of Yemen, is known for weird rock formations, rugged mountains, odd plants and especially its umbrella-shaped Dragon Blood Trees. Socotra is often called one of the most alien-looking places on Earth, with a landscape that can feel almost surreal.
But the odd look is more than a visual curiosity. Socotra has been isolated for a very long time, and many plants and animals have evolved in ways that you won’t find anywhere else. UNESCO has designated the archipelago as a site of exceptional biodiversity and endemism.
