Corpus Museum | The Human body museum

Who said that only in a fairy tale or in a fantastic movie can a person get inside the giant’s body and get out unscathed? In the Netherlands, for example, this is quite possible - and this is not at all a hint that drugs are legalized in this country. It's just that there is the only Museum of the human body in the world, created so realistically that the visitors are already breathtaking. Directly from the threshold, you enter the human body and can move through all departments of a huge organism.

Corpus Museum | The Human body museum

The Corpus Museum of human biology interactive museum, Netherlands

The museum, located in the city of Oegstgeest, Leiden near the capital of the Netherlands (it’s 40 minutes to drive to it from Amsterdam and an hour by bus) is hard to miss. From far away you can see a giant figure in the form of a seated person, as if built into a modern high-rise building. And the entrance to the museum is located on the knee of this giant sculpture, which you need to climb on a special escalator.

The spectacle is not for the faint of heart —Inside the museum is actually a whole city, consisting of different departments of the body, which you can wander around for your pleasure, if, of course, you have strong nerves.

Starting their journey from the femur and observing the creation of white blood cells and red blood cells, travelers are gradually moving up the human body. In total, during their journey, they go through seven floors, if you can call it parts of a giant man.

Each organ is depicted so realistically that it even becomes creepy, however, for beginner doctors or just amateurs to study human physiology, this is a real expanse. The visitor feels like a small bug, moving along the "corridors" of an artificial giant man and watching how the blood circulates, how the digestive tract works and the giant heart beats. Hearing and muscle systems, vocal cords, bones, teeth - all this can be studied in detail and see “in action”.

The work of each organ is broadcast on monitors and is accompanied by real sounds - if a person had decreased many times and got inside another person, that is what he would have heard in a giant womb. In some cases, the work of organs is presented not only visually, but also olfactory (for example, viewers are shown what smell comes from giant nostrils). Realism and complete immersion in the process of acquaintance with organs and systems is also achieved with the help of special glasses that give out to visitors, so in essence this tour is a journey in 5D format.

In the Museum of Man you can even see how the birth of a new human life and the development of the fetus takes place in the uterus (visitors are shown fertilization of the egg, too), because the steel man inside whom the excursionists travel is a woman, as planned by the creators.

Well, school-age tourists especially like the language in which, like on a trampoline, you can jump to the sounds of human belching.

During an hour-long excursion, a guide (you can use an electronic translator if you wish) informs visitors about the structure of a person and what is happening in our body in a given situation, for example, if one of the organs starts to junk.

By the way, while traveling through the body, visitors can clearly see how bad habits negatively affect the work of organs and systems and understand that in fact this whole seemingly strong mechanism is rather fragile.

The final point of travel through a huge artificial organism is the human brain with very realistic neurons. Its giant gyrus, as well as other "exhibits" of the strange museum, can be touched.

What else you need to know about the museum
It took 12 years to develop the museum project, after which the construction itself continued for almost two years. And the implementation of this incredible idea cost more than $ 30 million. The main building is mostly glazed, and the human figure is made of special steel, which is almost not subject to corrosion. The height of the building is about 35 meters.

Tickets to this incredible country of the human body can be ordered via the Internet or purchased at the museum’s ticket office, however, the organizers advise to attend to their purchase in advance - there are too many people who want to get into this fascinating world called “man”.

Children under six years old are not allowed into the museum, which is logical: it is unlikely that the baby will like it in such a strange place.
