The Dragon Paws Chickens of Dong Tao

Dong Tao chicken (also known as Dong Cao chicken) is a rare and precious chicken breed of Vietnam. The salient feature of this type of chicken is that the pair of shaggy, very big legs, when grown up, can weigh over 6 kg (rooster) and over 3.5 kg (hens) have been raised for a long time in Dong Tao commune Khoai Chau district (Hung Yen province). Dong Tao chicken is not like any chicken in the country in shape, especially big legs are "big" of roosters that diners often call "dragon legs" .

 Dong Tao Dragon Leg Chicken

When looking at these chickens with thick legs, it seems that this is either a joke of a witty photographer who “sticks” to the chicken body of the leg of some lizard, or the chickens are seriously ill with elephantiness. But both statements are wrong.

The photo shows Vietnamese chickens with big legs, breed Ga Dong Tao. Their habitat is one small area, thirty kilometers from Hanoi. These strange birds are very rare animals, this is the smallest breed of chickens (there are only a few hundred individuals).

In nature, everything is not just. Since these chickens were awarded such powerful paws, it means that for some reason this is necessary. Firstly, such legs help them to stand firmly on the ground, which is very important for them.

Since Ga Dong Tao is fighting chickens. Secondly, these chickens are a rare and very expensive delicacy, and a special delicacy is not only the meat of these birds, but also their paws. And the bigger the chicken foot, the more valuable and expensive it is. That breed was bred, looking, in my opinion, quite curious. Sometimes it seems that the chickens themselves are unhappy that they have to carry such an extra burden on themselves.

This poor fellow stands with a sad look and thinks it would be nice if she were the owner of slender chicken legs! But no, fate decreed otherwise.

Dong  Tao chicken with big legs

Many years ago, Ga Dong Tao was available only to members of the royal family and close to the court. These are quite large birds, their weight can reach 5-6 kg. Their body is wide, their wings and tail are small, their neck is long and there is almost no crest. And all this on such healthy legs! Nowadays, one such chicken - a dragon costs more than one thousand dollars, which, you see, quite a lot. You can try them in some very expensive restaurants, and the legs - a separate and very expensive dish. Let's hope that people will not let the hens of Ga Dong Tao disappear from the face of the Earth and these unusual animals will be available to residents of other countries. I mean the opportunity to see them, not food.
